This commemorative postage stamp stresses the importance of health to the individual Canadian as well as the entire nation. Both the nurse wearing her cap and the lamp (symbolic of the noble profession of nursing) emphasize the ideals of national health. Public health has made great advances in Canada in recent years. Through health programs, education has pointed the way to sounder bodies, improved living conditions, and better health. In conjunction with provincial health- promoting activities, Canada's National Health Program has been moving forward to new objectives. The portrait of a nurse forms the central motif of this stamp. Lettering in the vertical light from a nurse's lamp suggests the theme of the issue: "Health Guards the Nation" and in French, "La santé: force de la nation." This was the first Canadian postage stamp purposely designed with a living model as the featured symbol of the theme the stamps express. Cited from Stampsandcanada.com
